hibarihime: I’m not feeling this recipe. I don’t really see it reminding me much of pizza and the tomato paste flavor would just take over everything from how much you put on there. Seasoning the tomato paste with some dried basil, garlic powder, salt and pepper first and cooking it down with everything else before the cheese, or using a jarred pizza or pasta sauce would have worked since it provides more flavor and won’t overpower the whole dish.
hotelcharlie22: A true pizza steak is done with pizza sauce/marinara sauce, not tomato paste. Also, just as advice from someone who spent all of high school slinging cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, best tip is to do it on a griddle, so you can put the roll on top of the melted cheese, slide your spatula under, and flip the whole thing.
PM_ME_UR_BOOOZE: I feel like that is a *lot* of tomato paste.
Other than that, it looks ok, though not something I’d take the time to ever cook myself. I mean, I really really like a good ol’ philly cheese steak.
TheBertBertBert: Why do you freeze the steak?
outthawazoo: Is that not a shit ton of tomato paste just sitting right in the sandwich? I feel like cooking the onions then adding some tomato sauce to that and cooking it separately in a different pan would be better than just slopping on a ton of tomato paste.
ChewHaz: Man honestly I keep seeing “recipes” from Greg but 9/10 times they are just shit, like seriously who would want to ruin a steak like this, then drown it in cheese and put in a fucking sausage bun. I really don’t understand what Greg is trying to achieve with all of these videos. Hes clearly trying to get more people to watch his youtube videos rather than the gift version since getting monetized views = money but honestly if he wants to be taken serious he should at least learn to cook before he tries to get a platform for sharing cooking recipes. Just makes me mad seeing how desperate he is on reposting to other subreddits as well.
qawsedrf12: you will get better results to cook the tomato paste with the onions, then maybe add tomato sauce to complete the sandwich.
soomuchcoffee: Hey Greg! Sometimes you refer to this steak as scotch filet, and this time as a boneless ribeye. Are they not the same cut of steak? I am honestly just curious.
Reddit_is_American: I like my pizza as pizza and my cheesesteak as cheesesteak thank you very much.
_QueeferSutherland_: Olive oil doesn’t seem like a great idea. Low smoke point
big_sexy_in_glasses: This is an abomination. Homie put tomato paste on it as if the original recipe doesn’t use pizza/tomato SAUCE
wi-run-tings: I think the tomato paste is going to be rancid, needs cooking out not just slathering on something.
klitchell: /u/gregthegregest2 keeping the coal industry alive one gif at a time.
diggtrucks1025: Came to the comments looking for fellow Philadelphians who were offended by this gif.
197708156EQUJ5: Why did you gouge the cast iron skillet with that metal spatula?
Tobias—Funke: Every time the coal kettle appears I turn off.
im4peace: I’m convinced that this guy is homeless. The grill usually makes very little sense in these, but this time it makes literally no sense at all.
gregthegregest2: Here’s the original source video recipe: https://youtu.be/SVQHsCt2C44
Ingredients
Onion
Ribeye
Black Pepper
Garlic Salt
Olive Oil
Hot Salami
Tomato Paste
Mozzarella
Provolone
Bread Roll
Before everyone comments how this isn’t how it’s made in Philly, this cheese steak is my own idea.
Please give the source video some love as these post couldn’t be made without them.
Thank you to everyone for their on going support.
turtleslocos: I just bought a cast iron can I cook with it right away or is there something I have to do first?
asforus: Greg, I am from Philly land of cheesesteaks. Next time you make this try just putting the roll on top of the meat and cheese piles and letting the bread trap the steam and melt the cheese. It makes it 100x better. Also we usually cut the meat thinner, but this was a solid attempt, and I love your content.
viperex: Tomato paste instead of marinara sauce?! Why would you do that to yourself?
hathegkla: Ribeye for a sandwich seems like a bit much, I’d probably stick with steakumms or something inexpensive like skirt steak. looks good though.
PlNG: That’s some smooth one handed bread opening technique there.
