Recipe for Feuerzangenbowle (Fire Punch)
151-Proof Rum
Sugar Cone
2 bottles Red Wine
1 cup orange juice
½ cup lemon juice
orange slices
lemon slices
ginger slices
4 cinnamon sticks
10 whole cloves
Pour 2 bottles of red wine in a large, stainless pot and heat it but only until medium heat, do not boil the wine. While heating, cut oranges, lemons and ginger into slices and put them in the pot. Add cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, orange juice and lemon juice. Pour the hot mixture in a glass bowl, best suited are heatproof glass bowls that can be kept warm by a candle. Now comes the important part: place a steel grid across the glass bowl and put the sugar cone on it. Best suited for this is a “Feuerzange”.
Now carefully pour 151-proof rum over the sugar cone and make sure the whole cone is covered. Dim the lights in the room and light the sugar cone. Be very careful when burning the rum!! Now enjoy the show and wait until the sugar dissolves, you will have to pour rum over the sugar several times until everything is melted. Invite some friends and enjoy you christmas Feuerzangenbowle!
